Here at Organic Carpet Cleaning, we provide high quality, natural carpet cleaning for homes and businesses in Sydney, Australia. One of our clients, based in Mosman asked us if there was a way she could keep her carpets cleaner for longer as she felt she was booking with us more regularly when she had her two children and adopted an inside dog. So we thought we’d put together a list of the top 4 things you can do at home to ensure the longevity of your carpets.
1. Vacuum Regularly
Regular vacuuming is the most important thing you can do to maintain the overall appearance of your carpet. If you vacuum thoroughly, 1-3 times a week (depending on foot traffic), this will ensure the removal of soil and grit before it sinks below the surface.
Here’s a few handy tips when vacuuming:
Tip 1. Ensure you use a high quality vacuum cleaner that has a micro-filter to remove fine particles.
Tip 2: Use the correct brush setting for the length and type of carpet.
Tip 3: Go slowly and do a minimum of three vacuum passes on each area (especially in high traffic areas).
To achieve an effective clean, ensure your vacuum is in good working condition so it can do its job. This means regularly changing your vacuum filter or bag so no dirt gets left behind.
2. Leave the shoes at the front door
When you drive past a house and see piles of shoes at the front door, you know they’re doing it right! Even if you haven’t grown up ditching your shoes at the front door, make it a habit for your family, starting NOW! We underestimate the amount of dirt we bring into the house from our shoes. Think about it.. our shoes travel through public toilets, dirt, shopping centres, workplaces and so much more. And just because you can’t physically see the dirt being brought into the house, doesn’t mean it isn’t
there. Another thing to remember is shoes wear down your carpets faster given the harder tread they have compared to bare feet, slippers or socks.
3. Stains? Deal with it straight away!
Do you have young kids or pets that are always making a mess? You’re not alone – but it’s how you deal with it that makes all the difference. Deal with the mess STRAIGHT AWAY!
Don’t let your child’s apple juice set into the carpet, its only making your job a harder in the long run! When you see a liquid stain, clean it straight away by blotting the spot on the carpet with a clean sponge that has been soaking with a few drops of dishwashing detergent (do not scrub). If the stain is from a solid, remove it by gently scraping it off with a blunt knife and remove any remaining residue using the blotting technique.
4. Schedule a professional carpet clean twice a year
You’ve done the hard work; leave it to the professionals to give your carpet that deep clean it has been yearning for! Professional carpet cleaning allows dirt, dust and germs that have sunk beneath the surface, where vacuuming can’t reach, to be extracted, as well as cleaning stains off the surface, leaving your carpets smelling of eucalyptus, citronella and rosemary (in the case of Organic Carpet Cleaning anyway..). Opting for a natural carpet cleaning company is always a better option for your health, the environment and your carpets. Read our post on why organic is best here.
